Harold Hughes was born and raised in Hilo on the Big Island. He has an MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Harold retired from First Hawaiian Bank after 30 years with the company on the Big Island. Prior to the bank, he worked for C. Brewer & Company in macadamias and sugar cane. He has served on the board of the North Hawaii Community Hospital in the years that saw the actual building of the facility. He also served as President of the Rotary Club of North Hawaii, treasurer for the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Alumni Association and as a board member of North Hawaii Hospice, Island of Hawaii YMCA, and the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. Harold has two grown children and lives in Waimea with his wife, Esther. For the past nearly 40 years he has spent his spare time working on the family macadamia nut and cattle farm. Harold is a licensed private pilot with single engine land and glider ratings, and he also enjoys fishing and hunting during his spare time.
